{"id":639,"date":"2017-08-07T10:01:42","date_gmt":"2017-08-07T10:01:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nhslref.scot.nhs.uk\/?p=639"},"modified":"2017-08-07T10:01:42","modified_gmt":"2017-08-07T10:01:42","slug":"dental-orthodontic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nhslref.scot.nhs.uk\/?p=639","title":{"rendered":"Dental Orthodontic"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Key Messages<\/h2>\n<p>Referred patients are seen for assessment by a Consultant Orthodontist.<br \/>\nThe majority of orthodontic treatment can be carried out in Specialist Orthodontic Practice and the main role of the NHS Lanarkshire based service is to treat patients with more complex problems, in particular multi-disciplinary cases.<\/p>\n<p>This may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Patients with clefts of the lip and palate and other craniofacial anomalies<\/li>\n<li>Patients requiring combined orthodontic\/restorative management<\/li>\n<li>Patients requiring combined orthodontic\/orthognathic surgery<\/li>\n<li>Patients with ectopic teeth requiring minor oral surgery as part of their overall management<\/li>\n<li>Patients requiring combined orthodontic\/ paediatric dentistry management.<\/li>\n<li>Index Of Treatment Need (IOTN) 4 and 5 only should be referred.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, special needs patients where treatment is not practicable within primary care will be accepted. Also, a limited number of &#8220;routine&#8221; orthodontic cases are required to support training of orthodontic specialists and may be accepted for treatment depending on requirement at any given time.<br \/>\nPatients with a low\/borderline need for orthodontic treatment will not be offered treatment within the Orthodontic department.<\/p>\n<h3>Oral Hygiene<\/h3>\n<p>Patients should be made aware that if their oral hygiene is inadequate they will not be accepted for treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Patients referred with inadequate oral hygiene will be returned to the referring practitioner for appropriate hygiene phase therapy<\/p>\n<h3>Adult referrals<\/h3>\n<p>Adult referrals (aged 19 or over) will be accepted for assessment but are unlikely to be accepted for treatment unless they have a particularly complex problem or a need for multi-disciplinary management.<br \/>\nPlease make this clear to any adults you refer.<\/p>\n<h3>Clinical Information<\/h3>\n<p>Our referral form provides space for you to give any additional information regarding your reason for requesting orthodontic assessment.<\/p>\n<h3>Radiographs<\/h3>\n<p>Any relevant radiographs, if available, should be sent as attachments if possible or as hard copy by post with a note to say that the patient has been referred via the SCI Gateway.<\/p>\n<h3>Did Not Attend Policy<\/h3>\n<p>As per our did &#8216;Not Attend Policy&#8217; patients will not routinely be offered another appointment if they fail to attend without notifying the service before hand.<br \/>\nIf the referrer wishes to re-refer, they may do so but please stress the importance of attending the appointment to the patient.<\/p>\n<h3>Please ensure:<\/h3>\n<p>In order for your patient to be seen as promptly as possible please ensure:<\/p>\n<p>Patient demographic information is up to date<br \/>\nThe referral is completed as fully as possible<br \/>\nThe patient is aware of where and why they are being referred<br \/>\nThe patient is ready for treatment and their oral hygiene is excellent<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>Lead Clincian: Ross Jones, Consultant Orthodontist<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Review Date: 1st December 2015<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Key Messages Referred patients are seen for assessment by a Consultant Orthodontist.
